THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS
(BY "SIR LANCELOT."}
Mr. Frank Armstrong will fill the presidential chair of the Hawkes Bay Jocr key Club during the coming season.
Last season M. M'Garten and 0. Emerson were first and second on the winning jockeys' list. with 52 and 45 wins respectively. During the present term they each had 47 wins in the Do■liinion. M'Oarten's successes at Sydney brought his total up to 53.
In the two short distance events in which he was successful at the Tamworth Meeting Fingoland was handicapped within 71bs of the minimum weight in moderate company. Fingoland was successful in hia first appearance as a two-year-old, but had not done- much good the past couple of seasons. He only started about half a dozen times in three seasons.
__ A letter received in Christcliurch from Sydney stated that Currency, the yearling by Paper Money—Kilroy, taken to Sydney by J. D. Jones, was suffering from a cold. E. J. Mason's pair of Absurds, Nincompoop and Chignon, ■vere also laid aside- for the time being with a similar complaint. Ballymena has lightened up slightly sines arriving vi Sydney, but is now moving along nicely in his work. "His first start will probably be at the City Tattersall's .Meeting late in September. Glentruin, mother of F. B. Jones's team,'is doingwell, and the slb penalty in which she is mulcted in the Warwick Stakes nanat Eandwick on 6th September is not likely to prejudice her chance in that event to any great extent. Jones willhavei- Royal Dispatch to represent him m the Second Division of the Maiden Handicap at Eosehill and the Claren?eux gelding is expected to be prominent at the finish."
For such a useful performer, Tactail was well treated by the Sydney handicappers, and his success' in the Flying Handicap at Rosehill on Saturday would probably be anticipated by his connections.
Income was second top weight in the Grand National Hurdles, and it was expected he would top the list in the Trial Hurdles. The 12.2 he received is 101b less than Record Reign won .vith. b
The Cup Meeting of the Gisborne Racing Club showed a falling off ia the totalisator receipts, the principal source of revenue. The recent winter meeting, however, showed an increase of nearly £10,000, which must be regarded as very satisfactory, and probably means that any proposed retrenchment in the matter of stakes for next season need not now be carried into effect.
The distance of the Open Hurdle Race at the Christchurch Hunt Club's Meeting m a mile less than the big yace at Eiccarton. Horses engaged in both events, and their respective imposts, are as follow :—
The weights have been increased all round ni tho short distance event. The biggest difference is in the case of Boomerday and Tiuokaha, which have been raised 81b and 91b respectively. . Ml-s- }V." Howard is gradually disposing ot the horses in her care. She rcceiiu y sold Pitch to an Auckland buyer I itch raced in his new owner's colours for the first time in the Waikanae Handicap at Gisborne on Saturday, but failed to get m the money. Mr. Shaw, Q f Waikanae, has been appointed caretaker at the Otaki racecourse m place of Mr. J. List, resigned. , Ihe fine climate of Otaki, with its lovely beach and- sandhills, make the place one of the best training quarters in the whole of M. w Zealand, and it is V easing to record (writes. a. correspondent that the local trainers, Messrs. Higgott, Webster,. Penman., and Williams, nave all done remarkably well smco .taking up residence there; in fact, the district has probably produced more winDominion!^ "" ott" »
