Mr. W. L. Russell, of Wanganui, is staying- a few days in Wellington. Mr. P. A. Lawlor left to-day by the •Ulimaroa on a brief visit, to Sydney. Mr. Guy Johnston, managing-director of Messrs. Johnston and Co., left Wellington to-day by the Ulimaroa for Syd--•ney'. . . Mr. J. A. Johnstone. has been appointed Vice-Consul for the Argentine at Dunedin. Mr. W. A. Veitch, M.P., foi- Wanganui, has been granted three weeks' leave of absence by the House of representatives owing to illness. Sir James Carroll was granted a further seven.days' leave of absence by the Legislative Council yesterday, on account of illness. In appreciation of long and efficient service as a referee, and as an official ■af the Referees' Association, Mr. R. *ordyce has been elected a life-member of the Wellington Rugby Referees' Association. ■ . Chief Detective T. S. C. Kemp of Wellington, has received notice of his promotion to the rank of sub-inspector in charge of the detective branch of the service at Wellington." This is the first appointment of its kind that has ever been made in New Zealand. , A motion expressing regret at the death of Sir Walier Buchanan was passed at last night's meeting of the City Council. The Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wri»ht) paid a tribute to the work that °Sir \\ alter had carried out in the public interest. ' ■ Dra. W. J. Robertson and R. G. lhillips Turner have ..been appointed house surgeons on the residential staff of the Wellington Hospital. Dr. Hu"h Short has been appointed part-time medical tuberculosis officer on the staff. Dr. E. W. Giesen has accepted a position -as physician on the honorary staff. . . -Dr. A. M'Taggart, of Macdonald Col-. | lege, M'Gill University, Montreal, arrived by the Makura at Auckland! Hb is Assistant-Professor of Agronomy at the college and an associate member "f the Faculty.of Graduate Studies and xvesearch of M'Gill. Dr.. M'Taggart, who ! is a, New Zealander, is on a visit to relatives in Otago, and returns to Canada in September. Sir James Allen, with Miss Bona Allen and Sir George Elliot (chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand) and Lady Elliot, went to Belgium last week, writes "The Post's" London correspondent, under date of 17th June. The travellers were officially. received at Antwerp by the Governor of the . Provinces and by the Burgomaster. They afterwards went to Brussels, where they were received by the King and Queen of the Belgians. They were entertained to luncheon by the Minister of For- . eign Affairs in Brussels. The Hi"h Commissioner placed wreaths'on war memorials in Bussels and Antwerp.- On arrival at the port, Sir James and his party were met by Mr. J. P. H Mertens (New Zealand's Trade- Representative in Belgium), who took charge of them during their stay in Antwerp and Brussels. .. . '
