THE MARATHON
STENROOS-WINS AMIDST EXCITEMENT. '-
7AS.-IS, 13th July. The heat was still oppressive when the Marathon started. After running a lap and a half in \ho stadium, the competitors commenced the weary grind of 26 miles 375 yards. Stenroos took the lead at the half-way mark. . The Frenchman Vi<i'^er made a plucky challenge, but dropped from sheer exhaustion. Thereafter Stenroos was not troubled and won with six minutes to spare. ' A trumpet announced the approach ofStenroos amid, excitement. Ho finished apparently not tired, and after being photographed he raced across the ground to the dressing-room. Finland thus has won every distance event at the meeting- ' ' -. ■ Bertini (Italy) was second, De Mar (America) third, Haloneh ' (Finland) fourth, and Ferris (Britain) fifth.
