BRITISH BUILDING
THE NATIONAL LOCK-OUT
EMPLOYERS' SURPRISING
DECISION,
TUNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.)
(REUTEK'S TELEGRAM.)
LONDON, 20th June. The building trade lock-out will involve nearly 700,000 men, and will probably mean the stoppage of most of the building trade, throughout the country. The decision is all the more startling because- the national agreement embodying the settlement was formally signed on 16th June. The employers," in declining to endorse the settlement and breaking off negotiations, point out that continuous disputes and revolts have been occurring throughout the country. The operatives declare that the employers have repudiated their own negotiating committee, and hint that if the settlement terms are not observed they may strike, without waiting for a lock-out.
A national ballot of building trade operatives at the end of May -resulted in the acceptance of the employers' offer. ■
