RETURNS DELAYED BY STORMS GOVERNMENT IN MINORITY. (UNITED 'PRESS ASSOCIATION COPYRIGHT.) {ACSTItALIAN-XEIV ZEALAND CAELE ASSOCIATION.) (Received 19th June, noon.) CAPETOWN, 18th June. Severe storms have interrupted the telegraph service, and are delaying the reports of election results. The latest returns are :— South African Party 29 Labour ;..."" 18 Nationalists 15 Independent l CAPETOWN, 17th June. The polling showed an increase on the last election. The Nationalist Pretorians defeated Sir Harry Graumann. The Labour Leader, Colonel Cresswell, has been elected. Labour has gained the Turffontein, TJmbilo, North-east Rand, Springs, and Boksburg seats, making their total gains so far eight, while the South African Party gains three, the Nationalists three, and Independent one.
There are- 134 members in the South African House of Assembly. The strength of parties in September, 1921, was South African /Party 74, Nationalists 47, Labour 12, Independent 1; but as the result of by-elections the Government's majority had been reduced to 8. The Senate consists of 40 members, and in 1921 it was constituted : South African Party 17, Nationalists 13, Labour 2.
