WELLINGTON CLUB

ANNUAL REPORT.

The directors of the Wellington Bowling Club,? in presenting the thirty-eighth annual report and balance-sheet for submission to the general, meeting next luesday night, congratulates shareholders upon the .continued prosperity of the club and. its sound -financial* position. During the year ended 31st May, 16 newmembers were elected, and the" losses by resignation and other • causes .were 20 .leaving a total membfiship of 225, including 20 honorary members. Regret" is expressed-at the death of one of the esteemed members, Mr. G. Noble. The winners of the club competitions ..during the season ■ were : —Champion Singles, Mr. A.. E. Duncan; Champion lairs, Messrs. 8.-E. Manley and W. J. Powell; Chanipion Rinks, Messrs. H Jessup, Captain M'Arthur, J. J. Rob-' erts. A. K. Duncan: President's and Vice-Presidont's Trophies, Messrs. C Bush, G. S. Hill, L. Ledger, W. J. Thompson. \■....'

The Eastern Suburbs tournament was ■won by one of the club's teams, Messrs. J. M. Dawson, C. A. Innes, H. Frost, A. E. Duncan. The runners-up in the Uentre tournament were Messrs. J. M Dawson, C. A. Innes, W. J. Thompson, J. Porteous, who hold the Gisborne Rose Bowl for this season.

_The annual maich, Christchurch v. Wellington, for the Friendly Bowl, took place on the Christchurch Club's green on 9th January, and.resulted in a win for the Christchurch Club. The outing was much enjoyed by the Wellington members, -who were most hospitably treated by the members' of ■ the Christchurch Club. .... '

Ihe Duthie Cup competition took place on the Wellington green on Friday and Saturday, 7th and Bth March, and resulted in a .win each oh. the first'day. Qn the second day the Hutt Club drew a bye, and Wellington Club just beat Wanganui, and lost to the Hutt by-two points in the final game. 'The visiting teams were entertained at luncheon, and at a smoke in the evening, in the club's pavilion. - The annual match against the combined city and suburban clubs was played on Saturday, 2nd February. Seventeen rinks took part, and the match resulted m a win. for Wellington, which 'has still an unbeaten *• record for this event. The billiard tables continue to be a source of pleasure to the members, and are well patronised. ~ Mr. J. Thompson, of the Carlton Club, Auckland, having expressed a desire to donate a shield for competition between the members of the Carlton and Wellington Clubs, the matches will take place annually, alternately in Auckland and Wellington. It was agreed between the' two clubs that this competition • would be welcome in order to cement the good feeling already existent. The first match has been arranged to> take place at Auckland next season. The directors express their thanks for the great help given by- the ladies at the various functions held at the clubhouse, and the report says that the thanks of the club are due to Mr. H. G. Mayer for his thorough and artistic work in illuminating the club's records and bringing them up to date. The club is also indebted to the 'honorary treasurer (Mr. I. Salek')' for his untiring efforts during the past season. The green superintendent (Mr. W. J. Thompson) thanks the directors for sparing no expense in the endeavourvto bring to a successful issue the efforts to form a good middle green. The lower green has received extra special attention, all the worn parts being raked and sown with brown top, and where a good "take" did not eventuate it has. been returfed. There is now an excellent turf paddock in the small;, green, and, with proper cultivation, the.' club will be enabled to renew all weak spots in both the middle and lower greens from time to time. .
