TO ORDER OF ST. JOHN
LORD JELLICOE'S REMARKS.
<8Y TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL TO TEE POST.)
AUCKLAND, This Day. A warm tribute to the work of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem was paid by the Governor-General, Lord Jellicoe,' at the - annual meeting of the Aucklandf Centre of the association. In bestowing upon Bishop AverUl his Order as Chaplain, Lord Jellicoe said all present would agree that the honour had been thoroughly earned. (Loud applause.) It was a matter of regret that it had not been bestowed before, for the recom-'' mendation was put forward years ago by Lord Islington, and was long overdue. The insignia raified the Bishop higher than any other officer of the Order in New Zealand, and he had the greatest pleasure in bestowing it. la a characteristically happy little speech, His Excellency thanked the meeting f9r the hearty vote of thanks accorded him, and referred to the .fact that the Hon. Lucy Jellicoe held a cer-' tificate from the Auckland Association, which would always serve as a reminder of her connection wilfe the work of St. John, which had been a most happy one. "To-morrow, at a race meeting, we shall see the uniform of the brigade very much in evidence," His Excellency continued. "That is, Lady Jellicoe will, for I shall not be able to attend myself, and I am not sure about his Lordship the Bishop. (Laughter.). It' is always a great relief to me, to see .the brigade members at a racecourse, ever ready to1 lend a hand in case of accident; and I am also glad to know a Marine Rescue Corps has also .been established, which may be^of great service to me should the Iron Duke capsiz^at any-timei" His Excellency'concluded with an expression of deep regret at "parting company with so many old shipmates," and assured those present, that both he and Lady Jellir^e would carry away_ with them" splendid memories of the great work thav- «.is being done, by the brigade in the alleviation of distress.
