RAPINE'S RECORD

- Eapine has wound up his four-year-old career on such lines that a review of. his career may not prove uninteresting. -It is noteworthy that Bapine- is included with the division that was not called upori for an early effort at two years old, and the records show that he ran • his first race as a youngster en 3,oth; March, 1922 (writes "Phaeton" in ; the "New Zealand Herald"). Eapine .was well beaten in his first race, but he achieved winning distinction in.his next .effort under silk, and how he subsequently won the Great Northern Champagne Stakes is well known.- In his first race at three years old—which wasl in a sprint event at Marton—Eapine ran unplaced, and the defeat he suffered in .the following week at the hands of Highland in. the Wanganui Guineas' left matters in a doubtful state as. to whether he was to advance to the standard fondly anticipated. In the .decision of .the Avondale- Guineas Eapine 'answered' all demands, i 111-luck, however, followed Eapine when training at Eiccarton with a view to contesting the' New Zealand Derby, and "as a result Mr.' Williams was compelled to withdraw the bay gelding from all engagements at. the C.J.O. Spring Meeting. •• . • ■' * .Coming on to Auckland in the summer, Eapine contested the Great' Northern Derby, but in that race he had.to strike his colours tb: Enthusiasm, who beat him half a length. A victory for Eapine in the Auckland Plate, run ,at :weight-for-age, over1 this Derby distance, followed, and later on in the same month \e captured the! Wellington Cup, in which race.1 he -was timed to compass the mile arid.a half in the fast time of 2miu 31, 4 : ssec. Later on in the same season the Great Northern St. Leger and the Newj Zealand St.' Leger fell to him, ;and, as he. easily defeated Enthusiasm in the lbhg^distanbe classic event at'Ellerslie, 'there.was,",it must be said, a lot of evidence supporting the view that the daughter of Parimure was lucky to rank as a dual; Derby winner. The Trentham Gold "Cup saw Eapine Gompass two_miles'.Batisfactbrily, and that constituted' his concluding' perform-, ance at'three years old.' ,-' to New ; South Wales, Eapine won ' distinction by defeating the doughty David in the Chelmsford Stakes, a race run over nine furlong's:at weight-for-age, with penalties' arid allowances, and in whiph he _'met \ the- New South Wales crack at a. difference of only 71b. No further .honours went to Eapine at that ■ stage,- but it is ■ generally held - that with a little better luck'he might have reveled places in: the-Eandwick Plate with Eivolij:arid David, the two that finished/first and .second respectively in that event. ' It was' thought that Eapine had a chance in the Melbourne Cup with ,9.0, ■ but he- failed to,gain a place in, the great. Flemington race. "' Betrans' ported to' New Zealand, Eapine was popularly ticked off to! contest the Auckland Gup; in which, he was; allotted 9.0. An accident, however, that- befell the bay gelding" early;.in December, sent him out of commission, arid he was riot raced again until February .last. In' the following month 'he won the, Napier Cup under 9.7, and, though wellr fancied for the Trentham. Gold Cup/ 'he was decisively ' beaten in that race: by Ballymena. The second;assaults on Eandwick with Eapine followed, -■■'■ and how -her disposed of : his opponents in the settlement of the Autumn Stakes, Cumberland Stakes, and A.J.C. Plate is writ large oh,the records of the recent meeting held on the famous New South Wales ground. ■ • ' . A glance at the. pedigree of. Eapine quickly reveals that he traces (to many famous winning., families on both sides. The following are the leading; lines in the pedigree of this brilliant gelding :— Sire : Martian; 'by .Martagon (son.'of \ Bend Or arid grandson of Doncas-' ter) from Otterden, by Sheen (son of Hampton) from Springmorn, by Springfield (son;of Sti Albans). ' Dam : Pineta, by: Spearmint (son of Carbine and, grandson of Musket), from^ Pintade,, by- Persimmon (son of St. v Simon) from Guinea Hen, by Gallinule;(sbri of Isonomy). Up to 'date Eapine has contested 32 races, arid his record comes out "as follows :— ■'■" : '■■.<:•'.'■'■: . : .-: .. .--. <■■ '■■ •■ ' ■■ ,' ".''-v. ;' . ■-•. .-. Un-. ■ First.: Second.
