BRIGHTER WEATHER

A welcome return to warmer and more settled , weather conditions, as forecasted by the Director of the Meteorological Office, is being experienced to-day, the conditions being in marked contrast to those- of wintry character durin^ the week-end. Mr. Bates received a report from East Cape this morning showing that the southerly gale still persisted there, with a heavy sea. The disturbance, however, had apparently moved to the eastward, and the only other gale reoorted this' morning was at Stephen's Island. In all other places the winds had decreased, and were 'now likely ■to change by east to north in and south of Cook Strait, and from south-east to north-east elsewhere. Showery conditions had been experienced generally, Ji r .' Bates reported, and there was still further possibility of a continuance of those conditions along the East Coast An improvement had taken place in most parts of the Dominion, and fair to cloudy weather was to be expected, with milder conditions generally. The barometer had a temporary rising .tendency in the north, but was unsteady with a falling.tendency in the south. Seas were likely to be heavy about East Cape rough between Castlepoint and Kaikoura, and moderate elsewhere.
