AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP.

The Mayor (Mr. Horhblow) presided over a public meeting, last night, to make arrangements for the Australasian rowing championship, to be rowed on the Northern1 Wairoa Eivev, for which two contestants, M'Pevitt and Ceruiti, are already training on the river. The Mayor explained that the event would be the biggest thing of. its kind ever held in the Dominion, and the first time that the Australasian championship had ever been rowed under proper control, i Many entries already had been made i from prominent scullers in Australia and j Now Zealand. The meeting decided to form an organisation, to be called the Australasia Championship league, for the purpose of promoting and controlling j the Australasian (Australia and New'l Zealand) sculling championship, the j league to affiliate .with the New, South 'Wales League of Scullers. It was explained that the cpurse would be three | and a quarter miies, and the stake £500. A strong committee was" appointed,to go into the: question of finance, and, judging by the enthusiasm displayed, there will be no difficulty, in securing the money. ■ At a subsequent meeting, Mr. : R. E. Hornblow was appointed chairman, and Mr. j. P. Stairway secretary. The date of the. proposed race was not finally decided upon, but it is expected that it .will be at the eiid of the first week in June, so' as to ,get within the Great Northern Steeplechase' Aleetinir.
