The Rev. J. Blackburn (locum tenens) presided at the annual meeting of St. James's, Lower Hutt. The vestry's annual report gave a sumina'ry of the activities of the church and its various organisations, and the outlook was considered distinctly encouraging.

The balance-sheet showed the total receipts to be £1206 Is 4d, and the expenditure £1137 15s lid (including £300 for church enlargement), a balance of £68 5s 5d being carried forward. The following office-bearers were elected:—Vicar's churchwarden, Mr. J. Ellis; parishioners' churchwarden, Mr. A. Jarman; vestry, Mrs. S. Mason, Messrs. G. Aldous, J. D. Avery, C. J. Bennett, F. Evans, H. Ronse." J. H. Richardson, C. B. Robinson, W. H. Smith, and F. Tunley; auditors, H. B. Gordon and Innes.

The vestry's proposal to adopt the "■Weekly Freewill Offering," or envelope system, was explained and fully discussed, a resolution, heartily approving tiie proposal, being carried, with one dissentient. One of the main reasons for the decision to reorganise the finances by means_ of the envelope system is the necessity for the appointment of an as-sistant-curate, owing to ths rapid growth of the parish.
