SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS

NELSON, 29Ui April. The annual meeting of householders of thts Kelson Town 'Schools Committee was held on Monday evening. Mr. E. E. Boyes' was voted to the chair. The secretary, Jl'r. K. Gilbert, read the annual report, which showed the attendance had been well maintained throughout the year. The roll number was 1053—boys 552, girls 501.. The opening of a full school at Hampden street affected the attendance at the Girls' Central i- ..jol. The committee regretted the Joss sustained by the resignation of Mr. Gibbs, and desired to place on record its appreciation of his long and valuable services at the Boys' Central School. Modern methods of instruction in the infant department had been adopted, and a specially traiued infant mistress (Miss Kemp) was in charge at Tasman street, which was now purely an infant school. The pupils and staffs at Haven road had dpne very fine work in raising funds for various" school im- , p-rovements, and .their efforts had been most successful. At Haven road c, piano had been purchased with the proceeds, and at Shelbourne street a very fine school library had been started, and funds were still available for the purchase of a basket ball equipment and for preparing the necessary ground. . The committee has a credit, balance of, £79 18s Bd. "It, must be mentioned, however, that fiso.. of the amount is . money raised by voluntary contributions, and as such cannot be regarded as committee's funds." '. Wood, and Easdale. On the motion of Mrs. Watson, a hearty vote of appreciation pi Mr. F. G. Gibba's work was carried. At Motueka the schoolroom was crowded on Monday evening to elect a school committee. Sixteen nominations were ■ received for nhie seats. Unusual interest was evoked by the fact that Mr. D. W ■lalbot and six other candidates stood with the idea, if elected, of re-instatin" the hop-picking holidays. Mr. G. \f , Boundy, chairman of the school' committee, was elected chairman, and expressed pleasure at so many beiii" present. A comprehensive report and satisfactory balance-sheet were presented and adopted. The chairman stated that while they\ had a competent staff and committee, such as they had at present, changes were best left alone. Chamberlain and Hanard has been accepted for the erection of a new residence for the Bishop at Bishopdale. The same firm has also secured the contract for the erection of a new police station" at Port Nelson. , .Eight building permits (including one for a new dwelling), Q f the total value ot £914, were issued by the City Engineer during the past fortnight. lhe St. John's (Methodist) Schoolroom was crowded last evening, when the ] Hey.
