CROQUET AT EASTBOURNE
A proposal was placed before the Eastbourne Borough Council on Tuesday by Councillor H. M. Jones, that a croquet lawn should be laid down on a section facing the Muritai main road and adjoining the Council Chambers. He said the section was at present an eyesore, and something should be done to beautify it. He saw no better method than to combine utility and landscape gardening. . Sports were' provided lor most of the young people of Eastbourne, and, the older men had their bowling green. He thought it was time the council did something for the ladies of the borough, and this could be provided by means of a croquet lawn, which, he thought, could be laid down at an initial cost of £50. He submitted a plan and estimates of his proposal. He stated that a-subsidy of £50 had been promised by a number of lady residents ~ and they were prepared to pay a further £25 each the following year. • Councillor H. J. Levy seconded the motion, and the council decided to proceed with the work, provided the cost of laying down the lawn does not exceed ioO, and that the guarantee is forthcoining. ■. '.
