BUILT FOR SPEED

DUNEDIN AND DAUNTLESS REACH NEW ZEALAND.

<BT TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

' DUNEDIN, 30th April. , About noon a large number of people began' to assemble at the wharves to greet the representatives of the Special Service Squadron, Dauntless and Dunedin. As soon as the time ■ of' arrival ■of the cruisers was deEnitely known, the Education .Board got un touch with the various schools. ! The headmasters instructed- the children as they left for lunch to assemble afterwards at some suitable time and place, so that they might go in a body to meet the visitors at the wharf. Consequently a very large number of children took an enthusiastic part in the welcome. The weather was dull and a cold wind was blowing, but this had. little effect on the crowd, who .watched the proceedings "with the keenest interest. The Dunedin came into view round Black Jack Point about 1.15 p.m., and was-berthed three-quarters' of an hour later, while.half an hour after the Dauntless, which is the senior vessel, followed. .

lhe Mayor (Mr. H. L. Tapley), accompanied by the Civic Committee and several members of -the Harbour Board. went aboard the Dauntless and met Captain Round ..Turner and . Captain Ramsay, who" are in charge of the Dauntless and Dunedin respectively, and extended a welcome to them. Subsequently Captain Round Turner and Caplain' Ramsay returned the calls. The warships, are of the same size as the Chatham,. but are less cumbersome, having not so much-superstructure, and possessing .-short squat funnels. It is ciear from the'lines of-their bows that they are built for speed.
