Middlernore was the scene last Saturday of the opening of the Auckland Golf Club. The day was brilliantly fine, and a large number of members and visitors took part in the mixed foursome match, which headed the season's programme. Many of the players had their first introduction 'to the. complete- system of bunkering, which has been carried out during the.summer months, in readiness for the New Zealand championships. The play is consequently more difficult, but these difficulties havd made the course much more interesting and a keener test of golf than hitherto. The greens, as usual, were in capital order, and the fairways are finely covered with luxurious autumn growth. P. T. Upton and Jliss Upton won the match with the creditable card of 86 —12—net 74. A warm score for so early in the season. .After a 35-year career, Mr. R. F. Atkinson, v Philadelphia stecjilejaek. fell downstairs while sleep-walking and had to be removed to hospitul.
