SOUTH AFRICAN DISSOLUTION

SEVERE STRUGGLE FACED BY SMUTS. ,

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.) ' (AUSTRALIAN-SEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received 9th April, 11 a.m.) CAPETOWN, Bth April. The news of the dissolution caused a sensation on the Rand. Crowds of young Nationalists paraded the streets; singing the old Republican National Anthem, and cheering Hertzog; and talk of a Republican South Africa was heard on all sides. Heavy falls were recorded all round on the StockJExchange. The Parliamentary members of the South African Party met and assured General Smuts of their cordial support in the course he had adopted. The severity of the struggle which is facing General Smuts is emphasised by the "Cape Times," the .".Rand Mail," and the "Durban Mercury," which declare that he is "up against the fight of his life," and urge that the South African' Party organisations must be more firmly established, particularly in the country districts. The papers point out that the pact between the Nationalists and the Labour Party, the efficacy of which was proved at Wakkerstroom, is a new portent for the union elections.
