1855 OCEAN NEWSPAPER
A newspaper printed in a liner in 1855, 14 years before the Suez CiUial was opened, and when the journey to Australia' was mado by way o£ Cape Horn, is recalled by a writer in the current issue of "Shipping." The "Lightning Gazette" was published aboar.i the ship _ Lightning, bound from 7-k'l bourne to Liverpool, and was Fold at 2d a cr.py. With no wireless news—wi:ich to-day makes possible the "Daily Ma^: ' Atlantic edition—the editors 'were tJiio.wn back on such subjects as "Rules to be Observed by the Passengers." No smoking or naked lights were allowed below, and all.lights, except in the hatchways, were to be out by 10 p.m. No "Conereve" matches were to be used in the berths or en tho lower deck. All bedding was to be placed on deck twice a week for inspection by tho surgeon, weather permitting. Disputes between passengers were immediately reported by the ship's constables to tho commander.
