"Daily Mail ") states that Mr. Grindell Matthews, whom the British Government paid £25,600 for a wartime invention for controlling motorboats by means of a, searchlight, claims to have discovered an electric ray that will s,top aeroplanes in flight. He declared that when he read recently that French aeroplanes had been rlepeatedly falling in German territory owing to mysterious, engine trouble, he realised that the Germans,had found an invisible lay that, put the/magnetos out of action, and concentrated on the discovery of it. He was certain he had succeeded and believe^ that the ray he had discovered would not only stop aeroplanes, but would destroy _ them, and anything else on which it rested. Mr. Matthews gave a practical demonstration 'of the stopping of a motor-cycle fifty feet away .by a ray from his. apparatus.,'
