THE FRENCH ELECTION

POINCARE'S GERMAN POLICY

PREMIER ASSURED OF SUCCESS,

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.)

(PUBLISHED IN TH! TIMES.) (Received 7th April, 10 a.m.) , ' , LONDON, 6th April. . The Paris correspondent of " The Times," discussing the French election prospects, says the country.generally undoubtedly supports tho foreign policy of the new Government^ and it is the foreign and not the domestic policy which v.ill be the principal issue. The French people 'are firmly persuaded that Germany is wilfully and fraudulently evading her reparation obligations, with the result that they are now saddled with heavy new, taxation to make up Budget deficits which would otherwise n<t have arisen.' They ask that Germany shall be made to pay, and they approve of thn occupation of tile Ruhr as a means of bringing pressure to bear 'upon Germany and compelling her to toe the line. Reparations and Allied problems are bound to be uppermost in the minds of the electors when they go to the polls on 11th May. The high hopes which the opponents of the Government enter.--tamed at the beginning of the year-of' fighting the'election on domestic affairs eeem to be doomed to disappointment. Kor these and other reasons, M.- Poincare .iii almost certain to be returned with a substantial majority.
