NOTES AND COMMENTS

(HI " SIR LANCELOT."!

Some of the leading Canterbury owners have interests in the Amberley district, and lend their patronage to the old-time North Canterbury Meeting. It used to be held on 16th December, the anniversary day of Canterbury. At the 3880 meeting R. J. Mason won the Cup, two miles and a distance, and Northern Handicap, a mile and a half, with Randwick. Walter Clifford was riding at the meeting, and won the Consolation on Talent for Mr. G. P. Williams. Mr. John Limn won the Hurdle Race with Clarence, and Mr. F. Busch the Maiden with Farewell (by Totara). n '-The- Amberley Cup winner, Clareina (Clarenceux—Lady Eeiua), has only been racing since Christmas time, and has only been out of a place twice in twelve starts. She scored her sixth win on Saturday. She is owned and trained at Hiccarton by J. B. Pearson, and should us heard of in the minor handicap events at the C.J.C. Meeting. Mr. T3. D. Greenwood formerly owned Lady Reina. (Merriwee—Lady Helen), who had some produce by Danube, but they were not of much account. There was also a full brother to Clareina, a year older, named Non-oy. Prince Rufus, top weight in the Hurdle Race at Feilding, won the jumping race at the Franldyn Meeting. By fling Rufus—The Boyne, Prince Rufus is full brother to Puraoa and half-brother to Rewi Poto. He is owned by Mr. H. D. Matthews, son of the breeder, Mr R. J. Matthews. Although Sir George Clifford could only get second in the principal event with Whipping Boy, he took one of the minor events by the aid of Thorndale, who, according to the Stud Book, is by Sanquhar or Antagonist from Brambletye. by Treadmill—Bonnie Brae. Brambletye's first foal, a filly by Bonny Glen, died, and after producing the Amberley winner she was not served the following season. Mr. G. D. Greenwood was represented in the Novice Stakes by Gorgeous, who has been left in both the Challenge and Champagne Stakes at Riccarton. She is by Martian—Eoa, and is full sistev to Martis and Half-sister to Eonmark. The best she could do was to run second to Markie, by the .imported horse MarkJiope, who did a short stud term in North Otago, and is now in Victoria, from Replete (by Lethe), a smart performer in this island, and th.c dam of Clynejish another, winners. Last Crust has not incurred a penalty for tho Great Easter Handicap owing to Uib Aw.ipuni win. The Bezonian gelding would appear to be on the improve. Santonio conceded him 71b and a beating at Trentham. At Manawatu, when Last Crust won, there was 111b between them. In the Riccarton race Santonio is giving away 121b. The' Wellington-owned Hallow vonia (Hallowmas —Memvonia), who is leased by Mrs. S. H. Ames to H. H. Doyle, made her first appearance on the Coast at Westport on Saturday, and scored a win. The Otaki-trained Pillage was among the runners in the same eventj and finished third. . I Sunart, top weight in" the Feilding | Cup, has been paid up for in the Great Autumn. - Mireusonta was allowed to drop out qf the Great Easter, and will probably be' at'Feilding, where Mr. R. A. M'Kehzie may score another win with Clandhu, who is-nicely placed in the-Taonui" Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, with 8.11. Gaillard has been left in the Champagne Stakes, both at Riccarton and Auckland. He has been successful in handicap events up to five furlongs, and carried 9.11 when he won at Wanganui. At Trentham ha gave weight and a beating .to Lady Bentinck. Tanadees, Quiescent, and others. The best of the South Island contingent engaged in the Riccarton race is probably Tresham, winner qf the Dunedin Champagne Stakes. The Trentham contingent for Riccarton will probably include Quest, Scion, Quiescent, Last Crust, Piquant, '' Jubilaut, Otaura Kid, and a few others. Several horses were engaged at more than one meeting at Easter time, and the acceptances for the -'principal'- events at Riccarton will give some indication 'of owners'' intentions. Martian Miss, Parody, Solfanello, Ares, and Cupidon, whose names are missing from the Southern lists, will.probably be at Auckland. Other defections at Riccarton are Good Sport, who will probably be at Feilding, Printcmps, Poneus, and Zero Hour, who will likely be at Tauherenikau. Mr. W. R. Kemball will be represented at Ellerslie by Bonetter and Martian Mis 3, and the balance of his team will probably be divided between the Feilding and Wairarapa gatherings. The successful South. Island horseman D. Cotton has signed on to ride for Mr. J. Brown at Randwick during the winter months. He will journey, across .at the end of the month, and return in time for the spring meetings. Winning Hit and Limelight were both allowed to drop out of the Great Easter Handicap, and have been paid up for the Great Autumn. Limelight is in the Great Autumn with 8.2, which is 111b less than she received in the Great Easter. Two other proved stayers on the same mark as Limelight are Palestrina and Sunart. Palestrißa may be ■ the best of the three of them. She has. won- three times over the-distance at Riccarton. On her last, appearance, in the Waimate Cup she carried' 8:13, and ran the.ten furlongs in 2miri 7sec. Taking a' line through the running of Ballymena, who ran third with 9.2, it may take Pilliewinkie all his time to concede Pales--trina a stone in the Great Autumn.
