NEW YORK, 4th April. A report from San Diego, California, states that Mrs. Ewine Brown, wife of the American Naval Paymaster, who is alleged to have absconded with -120,030 dollars, to : day returned 76.000 dollars to the Naval authorities.
Mrs. Brown explained that she- met her husband on Tuesday in -Los Angeles, whither he had come after deserting his ship, which had been participating in the Carribbean manoeuvres.. She declared that she pleaded with him to surrender himself, and when he refused she secretly took a satchel containing" the money and brought it by motor." The authorities believe that Brown has spent the balance of. the money.
