PROPOSAL TO ASSESS DONATIONS.
CpNITKD PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPrRIGHT.)
(AOSTRALIAN-'fEW ZEALAND > CABLE ASSOCIATION.) LONDON,. 3rd April.- / A proposal to abolish church collec- ; tiong and adopt a system of assessing for each church-goer a yearly contribution led to a lively discussion at the confer-' ence on church finance, held at Westminster. ■ '■ ■ .
Canon Turner protested against sispence being regarded as an offering to God when it was spent to provide the vicar's coal and gas. The Rev.-Mr. Fry, of Oxford, said the ■ chief problem was the comfortable •member of the middle class who prided himself on' sending a guinea to church funds, yet paid a- fee of five guineas to his golf club, to say nothing of paying half-a-crown for. each game, and his whisky and soda at the end. - Canon Elliott assailed raffles and church bazaars. He said he saw one .programme which said: "If you don't speculate you will never accumulate." It should have been a tipster's advertisement,. ■
