LONDON, 18th March.
In the House of Commons, Mr. MacDonald announced that Ireland and Canada had refraiued from expressing an opinion on the Singapore Base. Australia and New Zealand were anxious for the establishment of a defensive base, otherwise the Empire's interests in the Pacific would be endangered. Australia was ready to sanction a contribution., and New Zealand had already offered £100,----OCO. South Africa favoured the abandonment, General Smuts describing such action as a bold move towards enduring peace.
