MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. E. Page, S.M., presided at today's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. Ivelina M'Cabe, a second offender for drunkenness, was convicted and discharged. The Magistrate issued a prohibition order against her. George Hardham; also a second offender for drunkenness, Svas fined the amount of his bail, £1. A first offender for drunkenness was fined 10s, the amount of his bail. John William Colfer appeared on charges of being idle and disorderly, and of an offence as a restricted immigrant. Upon the application of the police, the second charge was withdrawn, and on the first charge Colfer was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within twelve months. Elsie May Georgina Cooper, a domestic, 19 years of age, and a recent arrival in New Zealand, for sentence on charges of the theft of a gold ring, a wristlet watch, and a towel and suitcase. On the first charge she was convicted, and ordered to be placed in the Salvation Army Home for not more than two years, and on the remaining charges she was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within two years. Cooper wa6 represented by Mr. J. Meltzer. Ole Johanson, a Norwegian seaman, pleaded guilty to the theft of two hats, valued at £3 7s, but not guilty to the theft of a pair *of binoculars belonging to an officer on the ship where he was working. He said he had' bought the binoculars from a man who could not b e found. The Magistrate said he had heard that sort of story before,- and did not beljeve it. In consequence of accused being a married man with 3 young family, he .was fined £5 and costs, twenty-four hours being allowed in which to find the amount of the fine, instead of being sentenced to a term of imprisonment.
