NOTES AND COMMENTS

(8X " SIR tAKCBtOr.")

The Kilbroney—Fair Fight colt passed in at the Waikanae yearling sales was not long in finding a purchaser. He was bought by Mr. C. Boyle, of Wellington, owner of Carawock, at a satisfactory figure. There was 161b between Loughrea and Eoseday in thl^ Wellington Cup, but in the Dunedin Cup, run over the same distance, the difference between the pair of performers named i s only half the allowance above-named. • Glentruin and Rational are the best class performers engaged in the Taranaki Stakes. F. D. Jones is evidently eon- . templating a trip up the West Coast, as he. has also entered Economist and Zaragoza at New Plymouth. 'During the recent meeting. H. . Lorrigan purchased on behalf of his clients, All Gold (Kilboy—Noctorum), winner of a double at Awapuni, -and Entre Nous (Boniform—Secret Link), who will in future be trained at Trentham. After the good showing he made in the Douro Cup, Zero Hour should be favourite for the Victoria Hack Handicap at Woodville. His rider will probably claim apprentice allowance, which will reduce his weight 51b. There will only be one dividend, as Zero Hour and Stream will be bracketed. . B. Reed, who rode Rapine when he raced in Sydney in the spring, sfauck trouble recently. He finished- first on Geranial in the Westbury Handicap at Awapuni, and then not only lost the race for interfering with Last Crust, but was suspended for three months. His subsequent appeal was dismissed by the Wanganui District Committee. When over here ("Pilot" writes), Reed did not give the impression of being a rider who would indulge in the tactics that brought about his suspension. The Opotiki-owned horses, Alpha Laval, Grandiose, and Myoora, have been engaged at the Poverty Bay MeetThe local performers Basso (Bezonian —Soprano) and Bodyguard (Boniform — Maltegarde) were shipped South in . charge of F. Shaw, the Wingatiii trainer, and they will do their future racing in the Otago district. • S. Reid has engaged Merit, Quest, and Glimpse at the Taranaki Meeting. Gtaki trainer M. Williams, had Waimatao and Kalakaua engaged at Woodville, but both were allowed to drop out of their first day's engagement. The reason why the names of Tamatete and Tukia are missing from the Taranaki Stakes is that F. Tilley never nominates at New Plymouth meetings. Maria of Hereford, who was allowed to drop out of both events she was engaged in on the opening day at Woodville, is well engaged at New Plymouth. Little River was rehandicapped 51b for the Trentham win in the principal event at Woodville. A.'Stowe will no ■ doubt have the mount, and claim 51b apprentice allowance, so that the Martian gelding will only have to carry his original weight, 7.10. When he won at Wairarapa he carried 7.5. and put up record time. When Little River won the Napier Cup he carried 7.12. 21b more than he will have to carry at Woodville, and ran ten furlongs in 2min 5 3-ssec! It is announced that Mr. 'Norman Fal- . kiner has decided to dispose of his celebrated Nooriiim Stud.- The dispersal' 'will be held at Nooriiim on 28th and 29th February, and Messrs. Adamson, Mackinnon, and Cox, of Melbourne, and Messrs. H. Chishblm and Co., of Sydney, will sell the whole of Mr. Falkiner's brot-d mares, and the two imported sires, Comedy King and Spearhead. The sale will not include Mr. Falkiner's horses in ' training, or the yearlings. The latter will probably be offered at the Randwick Easter sales. Perfect Day, winner of the Gisborne , Cup two years ago, is the only Auckland horse engaged at the forthcoming Gisborne and Poverty Bay Meetings. Trentham.train'er I_ D. Q'Donnell will probably do the Egmont, Taranaki, and Wanganui Meetings, with a fairly big team, consisting of Solfanello, Ares, Bright Eyes, Vindictive, Lake Uru, Normal Life,_and Militaire. They all failed to get in the money at Trentham with the exception of Lake Uru, but the class - up the coast is not so good. L. J. M'Cann, son of the well-known trainer,- J. M'Cann, has Seen granted a trainer's license by the V.R.C. Committee. M'Cann will take charge of his father's team. Mr. George Currie will only have four yearlings to go into the sale ring at Wanganui next month. The two Absurd colts are. full brothers to Loyal Irish and Parody, and it would not be surprising if J. Williamson and R, J. Mason claim them. Mr. Currie informed the writer at Trentham that he was keeping the first progeny of Rose Queen (King Rufus—Roscommon), and Farce (Absurd—Cowl). Both have colts, the first-named by Absurd and the latter by Limond. Mr. Currie is also keeping a filly by Absurd—Bronze, who hurt one of her legs when a few days old, also a filly by Limond—lntrigue (Absurd —Our Lady). Pennon (dam of Motley) and Sea.: ■Elf (dam of Mermin) both had- twin I foals that died. Leta lost at -full brother to Thespian, and Absurdum's sister was kicked by one of the visiting mares, I and broke her leg. • J J.'Dombroski rode on two days at Foxton, one at Trentham, and then went through to Takapuna. While at the local meeting he had the misfortune to be relieved of his cash and railway ticket. Mr. George Tye has done so well .the last season or two that1 it was not surprising he was a buyer at the Waikanae Stud sale. The • Kilbroney—Glen Helen colt will be shipped by the Ulimaroa on Bth February. He will go' in charge of Mr. Colquhoun, who took the Absurd colts across last autumn. At the same time the full brother to The Cypher and Polymnian, purchased •at the Christchurch spring sales, and a brown colt by Absurd—Madam Butterfly, purchased privately from Mr. G. -M. Currie for 1000 guineas, will be sent across. Madam Butterfly is a member of the Martian— Grand Opera family, to which Soldier's Chorus, Cherubini, Rossini, and other performers belong.
