BOWLING

CENTRE TOURNAMENT

FIRST ROUND RESULTS

Beautiful weather "favoured the Wellington Bowling Centre's annual 'tournament, which opened to-day.. Fifty-six rinks are participating, and the Wellington, Victoria, Hataitai, Newtown, and Thorndon greens are being used. The greens were all reported to be in ideal condition. All the arrangements for the tournament are working well, Mr. R. W. Shallcrass having charge of the secretarial' duties. ■'■•■ ■ •'■ . - :

This morning the first round was played, and the second round was in progress when "The Post" went to press. During the morning, the centre president Mr. F. Meadowcroft, the vice-presi-dent, Mr. M. J. Hodgins, and the secre-. tary, Mr. Shallcrass, visited each of the greenß. Mr. Meadowcroft briefly addressed the bowlers on each- green, extending to one and all the compliments of the season, and exhorting them to observe the rules strictly. In any case, he reminded his hearers, that if they did not adhere to the rules the umpires in attendance would do so, and would quickly call offenders to order. Particular stress was, made on the amended rule regarding the following of a bowl for not more than 15 feet from the mat. and to the one-foot-on-the-mat injunction, so often urged and so infrequently kept. Bowlers, said Mr. Meadowcroft, had it in their own hands to make the tournament a success, and he appealed to everyone to strive to that end.
