(81 miORAPH.-PRSSS ASSOCIATION.)
CHRISTCHURCH, 25th Dec. Last Christmas afternoon the people of Chnstchurch were alarmed by a severe shock of earthquake. To-day they were startled by a heavy thunderstorm which passed over the city at 2.30 p nv' to-day. Thunder and lightning played with alarming intensity for a iew minutes, but the rain wa3 confined to a couple of showers. Numbers of people at the King George s°*-'^ n H1?1* street, were deprived of their Christmas dinner. The gong had mst gone _ when lightning struck the kitchen chimney, and split it open. The dinner, which was on the kitchen ranee ready to be served, .was completely rumed by the soot and debris which came down the chimney. The lightning did other minor damage in the hotel. • Showers of rain fell later, in the afternoon, and the atmosphere was delightfully cool after the recent excessive heat. At 5 p.m. the weather was yery threatening, and the outlook for to-morrow s championship tennis, cricket, and other outdoor sports is not at all bright. ..: ,
