ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER RETIRING

Mr. James Mac Donald, Assistant General Manager of Railways, is retiring from the Public Service on 31st December.

Some months ago, Mr. Mac Donald intimated to the Government his wish to retire on superannuation, and it has now been definitely settled that he will leave the Department at the end of this year. Mr. Mac Donald, like the General Manager (Mr. R. .W. M'Villy) has risen from the ranks. He was born in Scotland in 1862, and came to New Zealand with his parents .' when quite a, boy, and, after leaving school, entered the Railway Department at Christchurch as a cadet, in 1877. He has had a long experience in almost every office in Traffic Branch. He came to Wellington in 1911, as stationmaster, was promoted . chief accountant in 1916, and Assistant General Manager in 1919.

Mr. Mac Donald, who has had 46 years' service, is recognised as an officer of wide experience and sound judgment. He has been a resident of this city for the post twelve years.
