KEEP TO THE LEFT
WALKERS ARE FORGETTING
PATBOL MEN WANTED,
•j^jftjen the ''Keep to the Left" rule *&i brought into operation last SaturSay, 7on which, day Wellington walkers ■luck- to it handsomely, an opinion was expressed in "The Post' that unless means we:e employed to keep the rule before pedestrians continually they w,ould very quickly fall back to the old footpath habit of go-as-you-please. Unfortunately that rather pessimistic suggoation was not far from the mark. Wellington walks only moderately well to the left to-day. :j-For the first couple of days footpath lines'" served as a continual reminder, Iqc^they were something novel, but ""trays' familiarity with them, even though they were renewed this morning, has apparently blinded many walkers to the ifact that they (the lines) are upon the-pavements and that they were put therewith a'particular end in view. The "Keep to the Left" notices tacked up p^rp.osts al short spaces through the busier streets are still tacked up, but they, too, are hard to see after the first few days.
X" Maybe if the Corporation painted one half-- of the pavement a* violent yellow and'the, other a vivid blue, or any other tiiro/; glaring colours, acording to the f>ain"|s in stock, walkers would take notice again for another five or six days; That, however, would be rather ridiculous, yet if it were the only means '^hereby the new bylaw could be enforced and the only means wjhereby -Wellington's long-standing footpath disorder could be put to rights, it would be almost justified. ,-.There is, of course, a way, and one ■which will be effective as long as it is .employed—to detail sufficient traffic offitjertsj; both Corporation and police, to wjst'that the rule is obeyed. A traffic officer may -not be precisely a novelty afid.may not attract attention in that Manner, but if he has authority, and iises-ifc wisely, the novelty may be dispensed with.
