TEACHERS' SALARIES
DIRECTOR AND INSTITUTE'S JOURNAL
The Director of Education forwards to the "Evening Post" the following statement concerning a letter signed by the Editor of "National Education," which appeared in the "Evening Post" of the 12th instant:— .
"The > Director states that Mr. M'Kinnon's letter does him even less credit than his' original offence of publishing the unfounded statements which appeared in his former article. Instead of having the fairness of withdrawing these statements, which were disproved in my interview published in the "Post" of the 10th instant, Mr. M'Kinnon proceeds to make three more equally incorrect statements. Far from interviewing myself, as is suggested, I may say that until the request of the reporter of the "Evening Post" for an interview was made, I was unaware of the publication of the original article.
''Further, Mr. M'Kinnon raises the point that the matter, as circulated by the Department concerning teachers' salaries, was not a draft of regulations. This is a mere quibble, since the matter contained tho whole sum and substance of what will appear in the new regulations, all that remains to be added being merely the verbal machinery.. "As to the omission of-, the mark 'Confidential' in the first place, I have .to state that I was out of town at the time the circular was issued.
"With regard to the telephone message to the Editor of 'National Education,' I have, to state that my reply, through Mr. Bell, was to the effect.that as it was impossible for me—in fact, unlawful—to give permission for the publication of the draft scheme of salaries, it would be of no service to discuss the matter and that any statement the JVZ.h.i. wished to make could be forwa™ed by correspondence. This, Mr. ■MKmnon chooses to describe as curt and tactless, and from it he has made the same kind of wrong, assumptions as appear throughout his statements "It is noted that Mr. M'Kinnon states he lias nothing to withdraw. It is tinfortuantely the experience of the Department that rarely is there any withdrawal by those who make attacks, however unfounded they may be or however- clearly they are' refuted."
