DAVIS CUP

NEW ZEALAND TO ENTER APPLICATION FOR EUROPEAN ZONE New Zealand, which now has the status of a separate nation, as far as international tennis is concerned, is to take part in the Davis Cup contest next year; This decision has been made by the Management Committee of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, and was made known at the opening of the Taita Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon by Mr. M. E. Denniston, who, as a Wellington delegate, had received a copy of the minutes of the New Zealand Management Committee meeting at which the decision was made. It is the intention of the New Zealand controlling body to make application to play in the European zone, mainly on account of the fact that J. C. Peacock, who has twice been a New Zealand champion, will be in England at the time of the contest. Peacock, it is announced, will be a member of the team. During' the course of his remarks on Saturday, Mr. Denniston said that the Management Committee had every hope of the team achieving success, and, m time, reaching the challenge round and being able to try conclusions with, the Americans. For the Dominion's part in the contest next year, the New Zealand Association, it was understood, would not be burdened with the cost of the one player who would be in England. The first-chosen, member of the team, J. C. Peacock, who was present at the Taita Club's opening, expressed thanks for the honour which had been conferred upon him, but he regretted that, there were not other young members available to have been chosen in his place. However, he was pleased to ba able to accept representation of the Dominion.
