CLASH OF EVENTS

CRICKET AND SPORTS AT BASIN RESERVE. A dilemma somewhat similar to that which the Wellington Cricket Association had to face last year over the booking of the Basin Reserve for Boxing Day has again arisen this season. ■The chairman (Mr. C. G. Wilson) stated at a meeting last evening that the City Council had granted the use of the Basin to the Caledonian Society for Boxing Day after the Wellington and Auckland Cricket Associations had agreed to play their anntfal match on the Reserve on that day. A» there was an agreement with the City Council about the use of the ground on Boxing Day, they expected the council would have notified them of the allocation of the ground to another body, but the Caledonian Society had booked last August, and the association had had no official notification until last week. The council had virtually let the ground over the heads of its tenants, and they should point out' the mistake. Mr. H. J. Buck said the council had departed from all previous'procedure, and the association had to suffer by their. blunder. Mr. Wilson, said that negotiations had been entered into with the Caledonian Society with a view to coming" to an i amicable arrangement, and it was decided to admit a communication from tho society. CALEDONIAN^OCIETY'S DECISION. The-position was discussed at a mating of the Wellington Caledonian Society's Executive last evening, and it was_ decided to notify th« Cricket Association that the society's arrangements lor the iports at the Basin Reserve on Boxing Day had been carried so far as r to make any alteration practically imrible. ,The society had no wish to antagonistic in the matter, but it felt that it could not suffer the tremendous lobs which would, no doubter*, suit from any re-arrangwnent.
