NON-PAYING LINES
N.S.W. RAILWAYS A HEAVY DEFICIT MANY CANNOT MAKE EXPENSES. (UNITED PKESB ASSOCIATION.—COPTRIGHT.) SYDNEY, 26th November. The Railway Commissioner's report shows that many lines, chiefly country branches, involving a capital expenditure of twenty-six millions sterling, are being worked at a loss. Last year the aggregate deficit, after paying working expenses, was £981,000,,t0 which have to be added the losses on new lines opened to the end of the first half of the current year, making a total of £1,107,----000. The Commissioner adds that there is little prospect of most of these lines giving a sufficient return to meet maintenance, outlay, and interest on capital within anything like a reasonable time.
