ST. JOHN AMBULANCE BRIGADE
ANNUAL COMPETITIONS.
The annual competitions of the St. John Ambulance Brigade Overseas were held in the Buckle Street Drill Hall on Saturday, and were all very closely contested. The following were the results:— Women's Inter-District Cup.—Wellington South Nursing, squad A, 1; Selwyn Nursing, squad A, 2; Timaru Nursine squad A, 3. b> Men's Inter-District Cup.—Christchurch Ambulance, 1; Timaru Ambulance, 2; Petone Ambulance. 3. Inter-District "Wiilowbank" Cup.— Selwyn Nurs.ing, squad A. 1; Wellington Nursing, squad C, 2; Timaru Nursing, squad A, 3. District Challenge Rosebowl.—Wellington South Nursing, squad A, 1; Wellington South Nursing, squad B 2 • Wellington South Nursing, squad C, 3 Roaebowl for "Individual" Home Cursing.—Mrs. Wilson, Wellington Nursing Division, 1. The judges, in the details of the various, events were 'Drs. Henry, R. Stout Gordon Kemp, Corkill, Luke, and Har-court-Arthur. and Matrons Stott and Newman, who all expressed great appreciation of the high standard of the work shown. As an instance of the closeness of the results, it may be mentioned that in one competition there was a difference of a quarter of a point oijly between the winner and the runner-up. In another, in which there were eleven competitors, a difference of five and a half marks only, m a maximum of 100, separated the winner from the last on the list.
In the evening the visiting competitors and the local brigade members held a social and dance, among those present being Lieutenant-Colonel 1 Barclay, Deputy-Commissioner for New Zealand,and Major Gray, Assistant-Commissioner for Canterbury. The former addressed those present, and spoke of the work of St. John generally, and advised all to use their best endeavours to push the work forward, and especially to enlist the interest and enthusiasm of the younger generation. He also spoke feelingly of the approaching retirement of Mr. Seed. Assistant-Commissioner for Wellington, under advice of his medical attendant.
Mr. Seed, after presenting the trophies to the winners, said he desired to thank the doctors and hospital matrons for judging the competitions, the stewards and other workers, the Community Club and Defence Department for the use of the rooms, the Hospital for 'the Joan of an ambulance van, the -Press, the Boy Scouts, and the caretaker of the hall for much help during the day. On Sunday afternoon the visitors were entertained by a motor drive, and in the evening a. full parade of the brigada was held at St. Mark's Church, when the Rev. H E. K. Fry preached » sermon suitable to the occasion.
