EXCELLENT FORM

3 BY COLLEGE ATHLETES Jenkins a speedy sprinter Secondary school ohampioni'. . :" SHIPS: h A remarkable advance on the standard of athletics shown by the secondary schools'..representatives; • at- the first championship a year ago was observed at the. Athletfe'.Park on Saturday, when the second gathering was held under very favourable conditions. In many of the events last year's figures were improved upon, and, taking a line, through all the performances, the local colleges can claim a place of distinction on the field of sport, not only in New Zealand but in other countries. Some of the young students showed the iSthletic ability of fully-developed men; and the many fine achievements during the day gave sound evidence to support the contention that amateur athletics are a branch of sport through which much physical development is to be derived. There was one unsatisfactory feature about Saturday's gathering—tho attendance. Some fifteen hundred peoplo took, advantage of the unusually good opportunity of seeing the fine qualities of a fine youth; but the occasion •was worthy of much greater patronage. The spirit with which the boys entered into the contests, the keenness of competition,'' and the excellence of performance, together with a capable management, made the gathering most interesting and "enjoyable. '

■"_~." The competitions were divided into ■.-three grades: Senior (under 20 years of -age on Ist October), intermediate (under •;16i years), and junior (under 14£ years). -Pointa_ in all grades counted for the ■Athletic Championship Shield, presented by Dr. M'Evedy. The representatives "jot Wellington College achieved most success in .all grades, and their total of fPpints was over four times that' of the : college which' gained second place. Wel"lington College thus Tetained possession •of the shield. The points were as'follow : —

---Outstanding -among the numerous performances . of distraction, was the success ■":bf;C.-H. Jenkins (Wellington College) -in. the 100 yards and 220 yards senior events. His time for the 100 was 10 2-5 sec—l-ssec slower than the record creat:ed: at Wellington College recently. Jenkins ran splendidly, but he was closely attended throughout the race by T. Taylor, of St. Patrick's College. That Jenkins is undoubtedly the Dominion's •champion secondary school sprinter, was Ishbwn '"by his •■ performance- m the 220 f_yj.rds race, in /which he cntfout the diß--tance in the-exceptionally last time of i22[3-56ec. -The standard was set down at i244-ssec, so that Jenkins bettered it. by" 3£l-ssec—irnlya wonderful performance. '?Xmong the many other fine effort*, in addition to those mentioned in "The -Post" on Saturday, was the excellent ■Tiigh jumping. Four of the" senior com"petitbrs cleared the bar at over sft, the J. D. Gray, of Wellington College, doing sft 3£in. H. MacaskiU, College) won the intennedi-: Cafe high: jump with a clearance of 4ft -Him, which was also the exceptionally good effort of E. H. Gifford (Wellington College) in the junior grade. E. tSmith (of Scots College), who is only 13 =years of age, delighted the spectators "by keeping with" his much taller opponents until the bar was raised to 4ft oiin. i^The half-mile intermediate race accountr.ed for' another fine performance by B. -iAnderson, of St. Patrick's College, who "won the senior half-mile in the morning. -H© ran with excellent judgment, and powered the standard by 4 lssec. There r^ere other achievements of note, as will -;l'e seen by the detailed results.. Two ;eventß open to all amateur athletes gave i further interest to* the afternoon's sport, ;and, as with the college events, the com■Jpetitibn was keen. The champion, R. "Ai Bobo, who is now in Wellington, was ;£; competitor in the mile, and ran well f torn scratch, though he could not make .~fSifficiently good finishing effort to beat 3ilorton. r;"In addition to the officials mentioned ;.£n "The Post" on Saturday, the following acted: Press steward, Mr. J. W. Bussel]- announcer, Mr. P. Martin- ; Smith; call steward, Mr. J. M'Naught. . : '.Concluding results"are. as follow: — B- /' :: .SENIOB. ..'■'• ;.':: 100 /Yards.—Final: C. H.
