PURCHASE OF RENTENMARKS

10 IHB MIIOR,

Sir, —In the edition of the "Evening Post" of 20th November, there is a small Press Association reference to the new currency which is being issued in Germany. As one of the Jewish religion, I take exception to the manner in which this small piece of news was drawn attention to by the heading of this paragraph: "Jews Buy Bentenmarks at a Premium." The paragraph distinctly states Jewish and other speculators purchased this new currency, why this reference to religion at all is difficult to understand. Why mention the matter at all?

Whatever his creed, it is of no consequence provided a man is loyal to his King and Country. Jews, throughout the world, place country before, creed, and if you refer to Jews' having purchased rentenmarks, why not also state that Catholics, Protestants, and other denominations have purchased them? It is only natural that anybody in Germany to-day would be only too pleased to purchase that currency which is likely to be stabilised in preference to debased paper marks which are worthless. In your same issue there is more than a column devoted to the discretion of an editor. You, as the editor of one of the most prominent journals in New Zealand, should see that matters of this kind require the same care as any other literature, which is likely to cause unusual comment. I have noticed on several occasions, lately : that Jews have been thus referred to, and trust that in future this unnecessary distinction will be eliminated.—l am, etc., B. VAN STAVEREN. ' 21st November.
