EMPRESS THEATRE.
It is.rarely that the exploitation on the film of classic themee reaches so high a level as that attained in "Theodora, now screening at the Empress Iheatre. Classic screenings of this character when they do not mangle history too badly, have a certain amount of historical appeal, just as a historical novel has; but, assuming the- novel and the film-drama to be about equal in their regard for historical truth, the film-drama would still have a charm not possessed by novels, in that it visualises the age with which it deals, particularly the products of the arts, such as clothes, ornamente, and architecture. "Theodora" is modelled" on the drama that Sardou wrote for Bernhardt, and which was played here on the legitimate stage some twenty years ago with Tittel Brune. Rita Jolivet is an inspired "Theodora," and the supports are so good that it is hard to individualise, but the ".\laTcellus" (Mariano Bottini) is outstanding. The splendid orchestra plays excellent and suitable selections. .
