AN AMERICAN OPINION
PREFERENCE AND COST OF LIVING. NEW YORK. 13th October. The "Journal of Commerce," in an editorial, by Mr. L. Aclair, says; "There is already abundant indication that Imperial preference will not be universally acceptable to the various and varied interests existing within the Empire. It may not be the disposition of British Labour at this particular moment to make an outcry about the establishment of preferences, but Labour is not likely to remain silent long if the cost of living Roe3 > up." The newspaper apologises", in view of the high American tariff, for quarrelling with other nations' tariffs, but states that the h-ade relationships between Britain and the United States nre of no small significance to the latter country, and concludes: "Neither Britain nor tho United States can well afford warfare of the kind which now threat6ng. Preference may help the Dominions slightly if at all, but the case calls for ft broader type of statesmanship than is being given it."
