Martin and Goldberg, Dr. Morgan, and Mr. M. S. Galloway (secretary). A request by Dr. Morgan for leave of absence was granted. A letter from Ferdinand Goebcl, bearing on the fight in Germany against alcohol, was referred to the New Zealand Alliance Association.
In view of the looal appeal for funds tor radiation treatment of cancer, it was resolved to suspend temporarily an approach to tho public on behalf of thu British Umpire campaign. Dr. Morgan submitted a. comprehensive report on progress that had been made during the month. Correspondence was received from- — The secretary, Red Cross, Auckland stating that particulars' of the cancer campaign would be put "before the executive at an early "date. From the Town Uerk-, regarding the proposed new prison site at Miramar, and the deputation of protest. It was decided that it be iett to members of the committee to join the deputation. From tho Town Clerk, regarding radiation treatment for cancer. Dr. Morgan stated that a reply had been forwarded to the- Town Clerk. It was stated that during the month Health Week had been carried tfirough. An exhibition of the society's work, which had created a great deal of public interest, had been arranged. The work was in churge of Sister Lewis, supported by a band of Red Cross helpers. Demonstrations in homo-nursing and the care of the sick were given twice daily during tho week, under the supervision of Sister Lewis, who had also conducted brio' talks on tho salient features of health to large numbers of sohool children visiting tho exhibition. Members of the staffs of Veitch and Allan and the Government Printing Oflice had been addressed on matters pertaining to. health. Thanks were due for services gratuitously given in connection with the exhibition to Granolite Co., Mr. A. Martin and Messrs. Muni, Cottrell, Ltd., Public Service Co. (the latter having donated, a. Red Cross sign), and to all those who worked so loyally to stimulate enthusiasm for Health Week. A feature of the exhibition had been the part taken by members of the- Junior Red Cross from the Wellington Girls' College, who were dressed to represent health posters. The secretary of Peace-time Workers submitted v. statement showing 769 garments as having been made and supplied to infantile cripple children under treatment in hospitals. In view of the many calls'made for assistance in the way of clothing for young children, it was moved by Lady Luke, and seconded by Mrs. Reid, that tho Peace-time Workers make up Red Cross ddrcas bags containing garments suitable for young babies, to be issued to mothers in needy circumstances. In this connection Sister Lewis stated that she had been promised patterns of clothes recommended by the Plunket Society for the use of mothers. The committee docided that in making up the bags this standard be adhered to.
Specimens of literature being used for the cancer campaign under the direction of the British Red Cross Society had been received from that body. At the request of the parent body in England, preparations were afoot to launch in the Dominion an appeal for funds for cancer research.
The secretary stated that a number of persons, including ex-service men and their dependants had applied for and received assistance. A church body had also asked the society to select, a set of surgical instruments for use in the China, mission field. This had been done.
Gifts of newspapers. and periodicals were acknowledged from Mesdames W. Nathan, J. Nairn, Mirams, J. Kirkcaldie. and Rogers. Opportunity had been taken to distribute these among tho civilian patients at Porirua Mental Hospital on the fortnightly -visits of Red Cross representatives. Further gifts of periodicals, books,? games, <=tc. it was stated, would be gratefully received.
