"A THIN OVERTURE"

BRITISH PROPOSALS RIDICULED

BRUCE EMBARRASSED BUT NOT

DETERRED.

LONDON, 12th October. The "Westminster Gazette's" political correspondent says:—"Some of Mr. Bruce's friends are saying that the Government has done him a bad turn by producing their, preference proposals (regarding the free admission of Empireproduced dried and preserved fruits). Mr. Bruce came with an expansive programme, and the Government stirred up the sources of ridicule by opening the performance with a thin overture. Mri Bruce is embarrassed, of course, but will not be deterred from prosecuting his campaign. I learn that when the Conference is over he will throw himself into a propaganda campaign throughout the country."
