BUSH FIRES

TOWNSHIP THREATENED ON MIDLAND RAILWAY.

Bush fires driven by_an easterly wind to-day threatened to wipe out the township of Kokiri on the Midland railway line A five-roomed house, owned by Mr' Percy Reade, was destroyed m the absence of the occupants at Baxters Sidins. , , , The fires began yesterday, a change in the wind drivins them towards the township, where the school and sawmill vere endangered. The employees at the sawmill ceased cutting to go fire fighting. One stack of timber was burned. The residents fought the flames till a patch of fallen bush stayed their progress. The latest advices are that the fire is ds'in" out, but the district is overhung with a thick pall of smoke. Bush fires also occurred in the Dunollie Runanga, Barrytown, Coal Creek, ard Cobden Hill districts, but no serious damage is reported.
