PRIMARY DEPARTMENTS

AT SECONDARY SCHOOLS.

That is not the desire of the education authorities to encourage the establishment of preparatory departments in connection with secondary schools and colleges was indicated when a deputation' from Nelson College waited on the Minister o£ Education (the Hon. C. J. PaiT)' yesterday. The Minister asked how many pupils there were at the Girls' College, for which an extension of the grounds was sought, and the reply was about 250.

"Have you a preparatory department?" inquired the Director of Education (Mr. J. Caughley).

"Yes," replied the chairman of the Board o£ Governors (Dr. S. A. Gibbs).

"Oh, well, they should play in a primary school," replied Mr. Caughley. "We don't make provision for'preparatory departments"at secondary schools."
