DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB

FIRST DAY RESULTS

NOTES ON THE RACING.

(SI -TEtBtIRAPH.—SPECIAL TO THE POST.)

DTJNEDIN, 11th October.

The Dunedin Jockey Club opened its Spring Meeting in dull and somewhat threatening weather. This perhaps was responsible for a somewhat meagre attendance for a metropolitan fixture. The track was a bit on the soft side, but provided fairly good going. The machine handled £17,260, as compared with £19,200 10s for the corresponding day .last year. The card provided some interesting racing, but none of the New Zealand Cup horses comported themselves with any great distinction. Boadicea has incurred a penalty, which threatens to put her out of the contest for Riccarton._ - Roseday won well, but even so he will require some further tuning up to get over two miles. • He is, however, a very much better-conditioned horse than'he was at this time last year, when he subsequently ran such a good race at Riccarton. Silver Peak fell right out of the picture three.furlongs from home, but she pulled up well enough to suggest tha.t a, race or two and a few rousing gallops would make a tremendous difference as to her chances in more important engagements ahead. The two-year-olds seen out were at the best a rather moderate lot, and the sprinters running under welte weights were easily dominated by Eoseday. The day's running did not supply much as to the possibilities in connection with the Dunearn Guineas, for which it seems as if Gay Juliet will start favourite. THE HURDLES. Cartoon went out favourite in a good betting race in the Spring Hurdles. When the field settled, down Frenchman and.Red Admiral were always disputing leadership, and when-it came to >attlmg ;; outv.^he;:; finish Red Admiral had a bit too much for his opponent Cartoon was a fair third, but neither I'alstaff nor Eorke's Drift seemed to be able to gather sufficient to threaten danger. A new-commer in the saddle in A. J. Robertson had the ride on Orange Bitters, and at least had the satisfaction of getting his mount to complete the course for the first time during his recent efforts over jumps. RAVENNA'S EASY WIN. The Maungatua Handicap field gave no trouble at the post, and got away from a good line. Ravenna soon took charge, and turned into the straight travelling strongly, and looking a sure winner. Oaldowa, Firestick, and JJame Straitlace merely held the chance of getting second, a.nd the partially barren honour went to Dame Straitlace. Ravenna simply outclassed the field at the weights. A remarkable fact about the win was that E. Mackie, who rode the winner, ha.s only had two mounts in public, and he was successful in both. -His previous ride was, on King Sol at the Otago Hunt Club Meeting . 1 [•.■•.• THE. M'LEAN STAKES., . When the M'Lean Stakes field came into the birdcage, Bachelor Gay and bount Cavour looked the most forward. Count Cavour was made an odds on tavounte, carrying over twice as much money as Bachelor Gay, who ranked as second favourite. They were in good line at the rise of the barrier, but Bachelor Gay, who was apparently barrier shy, dwelt, • and hopelessly extinguished his chance. L ava and La I Keve were first to show out, and La i Reve led into the straight. Here Count Cavour who had followed them in the home stretch, made his effort, and after being twice disappointed in getting througa, finally found an opening, and under punishment, answered gamely, and got up , n time to win by the narXI * °v mar6»<s. The winner is a: W ChS Stmit, by Solferino from Bon Kin Ja T ranks as a ha»-brother to also by Solfenno, from Formless, by snffin- T- Bs° helol> Gay ma<^ up might have been dangerous if he had got au ay on terms with the rest of the mirU J h thf re was no doubting the merit of Count Cavour's win as he stayed on well at the right end

A CLOSE FINISH; ouri?p d fnea Z aS S ade a Pron°™ced farounte for the- Mosgiel Handicap from the opening of the, b.etting. The rurT ners got away from a;: gold: line and when turned out of the straight Prince Ferouz headed Boadicea, and they were dosely attended by Guncase, Silent King, and Pilhewinkie as they entered the back stretch, where Happy Warrior and Silver Peak were running last. HaT W tOU? l6d along tho back- ™<* .Happy Warrior was raced up to him as they went up the rise. At the distance Boadicea, Prince Ferouz, Pilliejymkie an^Purple Spur were almost in line, and all under pressure. Boadicea on the rails, stayed on. well and finally beat p nn j. e p eroUz by a neck; whilg ' t Pilhewinkie was a head away third. Purple Spur faded out in the last halfiurlong and finished about three lengths away. -Happy Warrior made up his ground too quickly and failed to sustain his effort. Silent King and Silver Peak were in a hopeless position at the tail of the field three furlongs from home. Uuncase was always well up until nearingthe straight, but faded out at the busmess end of the journey. Happy Warrior lost ground at the start, and with a better position in the early part of the race might have supplied some trouble to the winner, but horsemanship and being well seasoned materially assisted Boadicea to land a win. Boadicea incurs a 71b penalty in the New Zealand Cup as a result of her j win in the Mosgiel Handicap and Geraldine Cup. GOLDTOWN WINS TRIAL. Warseer and Barn Owl wore both strongly supported for tha Trial Stakes.

Wrtrseer is apparently not a boy's horse, as he failed to get dangerous, but did not seem seriously troubled when he pulled up. Barn Owl ran a bit jady, and was switching her flag three furlongs from home as' if her rt ™? s not too mncu in the business. The Patrician showed pace but could not carry on, and in the run home Goldtown and Barn Owl stayed on and beat him. Goldtown stayed on better than was generally expected from Absurd s stock, and his win lends additicnal interest to the Dunedin Guineas on the second day.

ROSEDAY WINS NICELY.

Roseday became an odds on chance m the Electric Handicap. Loughrea was next in demand, but at considerably less support than the favourite. When the barrier rose the field lay in fair line, but Jackaroo whipped roundl and was left. In the Pink was first to show clear from Angelo. Paphian ran to the front and led In the Pink and Roseday into the straight, with the others close up. Once in line for home .Koseday took charge and coming on won nicely by about one and a half lengths from Limelight, who covered a lot of ground on the outside, but got up ur time to beat Angelo a head for second money. Loughrea was half a length, away fourth, followed by Avispado and In the Pink. Paphian faded right, out when he hit the straight, where a head wind had to bo faced. Limelight ran a good race, as she was ■running last four furlongs from home. Loughrea was always handy.

AN UNSATISFACTORY RACE.

The field was in fair line when sent away in the Taioma Handicap, but something went wrong, and Wartune, King Sol, and Overproof were hopelessly .out of it. The others quickly straggled, and Enare and Frivol soon took charge from Bonnie Olive and TJleaborg. In that order they turned in the straight. Here Solero, after making up ground, got up and finally beat Enare by a head. There was a gap of six lengths between the second and third. Uleaborg was fourth. Some of the riders claimed they did not hear the starter give the word to go. The stewards held an inquiry into the unsatisfactory start, and it was found that the starter did not call out loud enough for the jockeys to hear the word to go. and so were left. This was confirmed by Mr. L. C. Hazlett, one of the stewards officiating at the post. It seems, then, as if the riderswait ; for the starter's voice instead of jumping out at the rise of the barrier. OCTOBER WELTER. Outside of Owlescombe and Some Kid, anything was showing a price in the October Welter. Pickaninny carried the money when the field got' going and led into the straight, where Radial drew up and won rather comfortably by a short neck,. Some Kid was a bad third. Owlescombe was well up at the turn, but then faded right out,.
