FATAL ENCOUNTERS

NEW YORK, 7th October. Two fatal encounters between police and liquor smugglers are reported. At Los Angeles five hundred police turned out in an attempt to catdh a motor-car whk* was alleged to be carrying a_party of "bootleggers," who had been hailed by George Christie, a Federal Prohibition officer, whom they shot. The police engaged in a running battle with the motor-car through Hollywood before their quarry escaped. The second case was in Toronto, where the police attacked a motor-boat which was attempting to carry 2500 bottles of whisky to Buffalo. John Gough, son of t'.ie captain of the motor-boat, was shol dead.
