THE TRADE BALANCE

OVER SEVEN BULLIONS TO TEE

- GOOD.

The imports into New Zealand for the eight months ended 31st August last, states the Government Statistician, totalled £24,648,012, an increase of approximately £ ix millions over the corresponding period of last year. The increase is general, although the greatest change is-evident in such items as motor-vehi-clee, wearing apparel, boots and shoes, cotton and woollen piece geodg, and oils. v Exports totalling £35,531,590 are

greater by nearly th«e millions than last year. Butter aiid chesse are chiefly responsible for the imroved position Despite the advance recorded in imports, -which is due no doubt to ereater business confidence, exports show a surplus Of over -eleven millions. 'Such a P? 811. 10".', *yen when such factors as invisible imports and exports are taken into consideration, must be regarded as eminently satisfactory. The Statistician illustrates his remarks by an instructive diagram, showing that imports which wer« a £>w ebb -during 1921 and the greater part of last year have maintained a uniformly high level for the past twelve months or more. In the case of exports, the seasonal nature of.the trade is well distinguished. The. trade of New Zealand with different countries is set but below: Imports. Exports. £ £ ■ U.
