THE GAOL SITE
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —In your excellent Teport of the meeting at Seatoun, in reference to the above matter, it was not explained that some of my remarks referred to possible escapees. While this matter is serious for Miramar (which is coming into its own so far as settlement is concerned), it is none the les3 important to_ the city as a whole. It will certainly bo a splendid introduction to the "Suprema a Situ" to have a prison at the entrance to our beautiful harbour, and evevy true citizen should be "up against" this proposal, which is on a Bar with the Mount Cook Prison aito
over again. Wellington has taken several matters m the neck," a nd this is one of the occasions when pride of city should assert itself (if it exists) lam etc., , '

TO TUB BDITOK.
Sir,—As a resident of over thirty years in Wellington, I fail to see what legitimate objection there can be to the proposed site in the valley at the top of Mount HalsweU. Every one knows we must have a gaol somewhere and I would like to know what disgrace there is if the gaol is seen by anyone at a distance. Do the objectors think prisoners are inhuman, and ought to be isolated ? Do they not want a bit of sunshine and cheerful surroundings ?' Again what is the use of suggesting Red Eocks, or other outlandish sites, which are totally unsuitable in the interests of the public and gaol authorities. Likewise rest assured, place the gaol where you will, there will be self-interested parties objecting to the proposals. I quite agree for long-sentenced prisoners the site is not suitable, but for shortsentence, and prisoners awaiting trial and sentence, it is an ideal spot. I a m etc., '
