HEALTH AND THE BODY
Dr. Agnes Bennett's interesting lecture, the second of the Health Week series for women, was presided over by Lady Luke, and took place last night in the. Concert Chamber. The ■ leoouier spoke of health in relation to the- vas'te products of the body. The speaker compared the body to a factory. Life was ft 66ries of everite, such as went on :u a factory; material was brought in and had to go through certain processes uefore being turned out. The body was made up of innumerable cells, of all shapes and sizes, and placed in all kinds of positions, and these cells were filled with a fluid rather like white of egg, and ; these cells have to be kept in-position and nourished if we are to maintinn life, and when our factory was in,good going order, that is what we call health. To maintain our factory we must have" means.not only of bringing material into it, but of taking away waste products, otherwise there will be ah accumulation, and the factory will be choked. The speaker. stressed the importance of discarding the waste products_ of the body, and one of the most importantof these was ventilation, for the air wo breathe was a great factor in making heat, and if we re-breathed discarded air it was like breathing in smoke from a fire. Children could not be taught too young to sleep in the open air, and with plenty of ventilation. The doctor quoted the fact that children suffering from tuberculosis were being treated in the open air, and with very little clothing, in the snow of the Swiss Alps and with very beneficial results. Tlie elimination of waste products by the bowels was also spoken of, and the lecturer gave some sound advice on the matter of diet, comparing the diet of today, which is often a • sloppy mess, to the hard tack consumed by our primeval ancestors.
The lecturer was listened to with great attention by a large number of women and girls, and at the conclusion a number of questions were asked. A hearty vote of thanks'to Dr. Bennett concluded the proceedings.
