WELLINGTON DEFEATS HAWKES BAY

NAPIER, 30th September. ■ The interpiovincial hockey match, Wellington- v ; Hawkes Bay, was played here yesterday, in glorious weather. J-he game was an interesting exhibition throughout, the first half being very even. From the bully Hawkes Bay kept up an ince3£ant attack, but the Wellington defence was sound, Martm and ' Burton repeatedly frustrating the Hawkes Bay attacks, "which were chiefly individual, and did not get there becausf) of poor support. The Wellington forwards combined better, exhibiting good stick wsfk at times, but a great tendency to rely on one hand, consequently good chances were lost. There was no score at half-time In the ecoond half the visitors played with tha tun at their, backs, and for a time the advantage lay with' the home team. xhe Wellington forwards thereafter assumed the upper hand, scoring three goals; inside five minutes. Armstrong was a tower of strength in the Welling-' ton front line, keeping his' associates IT ™,T A further goal was scored by Wellington, as the result of a great aolo run by Webley. Hawkes Bay form improved, and the Wellington defence was tested for a time, Hawkes Bay eventually scoring from a scramble in front of the net. Play became faster in the latter stages. Cuinmings beautifully stopping many hard shots Goals were scored for Wellington by Hood (2) and Webley (2). Hawkes Bay s goal was scored by Porsyth.
