PORT NICHOLSON SILVER BAND.
The fourteenth recital of the Port Nicholson Silver Band was held at'tha Grand Opera House last evening, the band being assisted, as usual, by a number of solo vocalists and instrumentalists. Late comers found difficulty m securing a. seat, for the concert was so well patronised that the house was well filled some tima before the first item - commenced. . The band, under the able conductorship of Mr. J. J. Drew,".gave artistic interpretations of a number/ of popular band works, opening- -witU Bridge's arrangement of the hymn, "Peace, Perfect Peace." Then followed tho Overture, "Bed Gnome" (Rollestoh), Oscar Strauss's selection, "Lov* and. Laughter," an intermezzo by Hub-. bell entitled "Kisses," and a oonclud* ing march, "Electric Wave" (Hildreth)., Little Miss Zelma Carroll, one of the most successful performers a.t the recent; competitions, selected from her compe-' tjtion repartoire a humorous- recitation, in the Tram," written specially for her by a well-known local lady. ' So well Teceiveo] was her clever performance that sho was obliged to reappear with a similar offering, "Peach Pie "■ Miss Elsie-Kell the popnlar • soprano, favoured with Cowen'a "At the Mid Jr,» Nffil»t,» and Easthope Marto s, Sk Nicholas Day in the Mornoi?-" r Vrer ®ncore number was '"JOh, f^P A^}K T>/ i Sht"- The beautifui Meditation from tha opera "Thais " though originally written for violin, lost none of its charm as interpreted on the cello by Mr. Claude Tannar; recalled," "t ! n ner., pla?ed a more technical — Tarantelle." "Mr. W. W.< Marshall, A singer, who has lately sprung .into prominence in Wellington, pleased the-audi-T??n'WT ? bra^ ke^-"O«t on -the i7 eP (L°hr)> and The .Last Call" Mr. Prank Crowther displayed murfcaanly taste in his rendering of the accompaniments.
