GYMNASTIC DISPLAY

Y.M.C.A.'S FINE EFFORT.

Health, with its ultimate result, mental well-being, is the object of the Y.M.C.A. in promoting physical culture classes for the young people of the community, and if the annual display of pupils of the organisation at the Grand Opera House on Saturday night is any criterion, those in charge of the Y.M.C.A. have gone a long way towards achieving the desired result. The exer, cises, marching, and "stunt" displays were really remarkable, and showed more clearly than words could convey the hard work which had been devoted to the pupils by their instructor, Mr. J. A. Duffy. A very interesting programme included a grand march by all the pupils attending the physical culture classes; dumb-bell exercises, and a pyramid display by the men, who were also seen in clever exhibitions of work on the parallel bars and horizontal bar, under Leader D. Halley, hand-balancing under Leader C. M'Knightj agility exercise under Leader A. Fegan, and barbell exercises by the ladies. Humour was supplied by the "Go-Slow"-Pierrots, whose pyramid building was little short of wonderful, and whoso comic pantomime brought down the house. The ladies' part in the entertainment comprised deportment exercises, silver club drill, with pretty lighting effects, Egyptian wand drill, under Leader W. Allen, and electric club drill, under Leader E.Ayling. The girls contributed Swedish drill, skipping exercises, gymnastic dancing, and ball swinging under Leaders E. Allen and N. Thompson. A very fine massed dumb-bell display was presented by th<3 boys and a skilful gymnastic drill under Leader J. Lawsoni The large audience, was fully appreciative of the entertainment, and only the limited tune allowed for the display prevented encores being given, so enthusiastic, were the onlookers.
